A man who applied for the job of driver in Miyagi Prefecture has filed a complaint with a job placement center in Osaka’s Airin day-laborer district, saying he was made to work at the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, sources familiar with the case said Sunday.
The agent who placed the ad through the Nishinari labor welfare center has admitted to the center that the man worked in the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station that was smashed up by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to the sources.
The labor ministry’s Osaka district bureau has also started investigating the case, they said.
A support group for the man said, "It’s an unpardonable act to send a day laborer in a socially weak position to a dangerous place."
According to the sources, the center placed an ad around March 17 at the request of the agent. It was seeking ‘‘a driver for a 10-ton dump truck’’ in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, for a daily wage of 12,000 yen for 30 days.
The man successfully applied for the job and was sent to the region. Around March 25, during the employment period, the man telephoned the center, saying, ‘‘I’m removing rubble near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, clad in protective gear. The job offer was supposed to be in Miyagi. What happened?’’ according to the sources.
After the employment period ended, the center confirmed with the man and the agent that he was engaged in work within the plant’s premises for a period, the sources said.
Tokyo Electric Power Co, which operates the nuclear power plant, said some workers from its ‘‘associate’’ companies, other than its own employees, may engage in removal of rubble or laying cables.
The center in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward, which includes the Airin district, has so far withheld the name of the agent and other details including the nature of work the man undertook, saying it is still conducting investigations.
Airin is known as the district that draws the largest number of day laborers in Japan.
