SMAP gives first overseas concert in Beijing
BEIJING - Japanese pop group SMAP staged their first overseas concert in Beijing on Friday, performing various numbers that included Chinese-language versions of some of their hit songs in front of an audience of about 40,000.
The group had initially planned to hold concerts in China last year. However, they were forced to postpone them for various reasons, including a souring of Japan-China relations after an incident in which a Chinese fishing boat collided with Japan Coast Guard vessels near the Senkaku Islands.
The concert program included Chinese versions of "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana" (The only flower in the world) and "Yozora no Muko" (Over the night sky).
After arriving in Beijing, the group received VIP treatment from the Chinese government. They were allowed to hold a press conference at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday, and they also met Tang Jiaxuan, a former state councillor.
Observers say the Chinese government is trying to take advantage of the opportunity to improve national sentiment toward Japan.

Parody of Girls Generation song proves big hit on YouTube
A parody of Korean pop group Girls Generation’s song “Gee” by SMAP’s Masahiro Nakai, accompanied by Oyaji Dancers, a dance group of elderly men, has become a big hit on YouTube. For the parody, they renamed Girls Generation (Shojo Jidai) to Showa Jidai (Showa generation)—the era from Dec 25, 1926 to Jan 7, 1989. They also renamed the song from “Gee” to 爺 (Jii) which means old man.
In the video, the guys dance to the same choreography as in the original version and the background uses part of the original version. Their dance moves and their costumes are well prepared, especially Nakai’s make-up and wig which make him look like a “jii-san.”
This video is popular not only in Japan but also in other countries too and has been played more than 2 million times so far on YouTube. Responses from other countries include “Good job, Nakai!!” “Japan is great!” etc.
Parodies like this often appear on the Fuji TV program “SMAP×SMAP.”

The top three tracks are “Original Smile” (from June 1994), “Hazimari no uta” (from September 2008), and “Not Alone” (from May 2005).
The album, which will sell for 3,570 yen, comes with a yellow or red handkerchief — red representing health, and yellow representing happiness. Two hundred yen from the sale of each album will go toward the “Marching J” charity project.
According to SMAP’s management, Johnny’s Entertainment, many Japanese fans wrote to the agency following the March earthquake and tsunami disaster to say that SMAP songs cheered them up in the wake of the tragedy. The messages led to the album’s concept.
The band will also hold a fan meet-and-greet on Sept 9, where 1,000 fans, chosen by lottery, will get the new album for free.

Wen meets SMAP; hopes friendship will bloom through songs
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Japanese pop group SMAP on Saturday and expressed hope that their songs will help to bloom flowers of friendship between the two countries as they are scheduled to perform in China later this year.
SMAP sang their hit song, ‘‘Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana’’ (The only flower in the world), in Chinese during their meeting at a Tokyo hotel with the Chinese leader, who is in Japan for an annual trilateral summit that also involves South Korea.
‘‘I hope that your performance in China will plant seeds of friendship between China and Japan, and that they will bear beautiful flowers,’’ Wen told the five-member all-male group, which had to cancel their performances in China twice last year.
The group is scheduled to hold its first overseas concert in Beijing on Sept 16, according to its management firm Johnny & Associates.
Group leader Masahiro Nakai told reporters after meeting with Wen, ‘‘It was regrettable (that we had to cancel our performance twice). We have strongly wanted to do our first show overseas in China.’‘
The group canceled an event at the Shanghai World Expo last June due to safety concerns about the venue as well as a live show in Shanghai in October as Japan-China relations deteriorated after a Chinese fishing boat collided with Japanese patrol ships off the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The group is scheduled to hold its first overseas concert in Beijing on Sept 16, according to its management firm Johnny & Associates.
Group leader Masahiro Nakai told reporters after meeting with Wen, ‘‘It was regrettable (that we had to cancel our performance twice). We have strongly wanted to do our first show overseas in China.’‘
The group canceled an event at the Shanghai World Expo last June due to safety concerns about the venue as well as a live show in Shanghai in October as Japan-China relations deteriorated after a Chinese fishing boat collided with Japanese patrol ships off the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. スマップは、東シナ海の尖閣諸島沖で中国漁船と日本の巡視船との衝突事件での日中関係悪化に伴い、去年の６月上海万博での行事を、そし９月の上海でのライブショーも、会場での安全面の懸念からキャンセルした。」
