上の図を見ても分かるように、デスクトップの画面ががらりと変わっている。タイル型のアイコンが並ぶ画面はMetro と呼ばれる新しいスタイルとなっている。
ユーザーインターフェイスは従来のWindowsからがらりと変わり、タッチスクリーン型インターフェイスとなっているのが大きな特徴だ。
タッチスクリーン方式はiPadやスマートフォンなどではすでにお馴染みとなっているが、今度はパソコンもそれを取り入れることになる。
ただし、すべての操作が画面タッチ方式で行われるのは無理なのでは。やはり、キーボードやマウスは必要となるはずだ。

(CBS News) Windows 8 will hit store shelves this October, according to a new report.

Microsoft is said to be finish work on the new operating system this summer. Source close to the matter revealed the release schedule to Bloomberg, but "declined to be named."
The production schedule is aligned with the holiday shopping season. Hardware companies will have time to include Window 8 in new smartphones and tablets.
The new operating system, which is the successor to Windows 7, will work with devices running in Intel and ARM chips.
Windows 8's user interface is a shift away from the traditional Windows desktop we're familiar with. Microsoft's new Metro style is more geared toward a touchscreen interface, with tiled icons.
A Windows 8 consumer preview was released last month.
